The Suez Canal was constructed by Ferdenand De Lessups, but was bought by the British in the reign of Queen Victoria, as a vital waterway to her colonies in the Far East

British Troops were posted along the length and breadth of the Canal to protect this vital supply line
Colonel Abdul Nassar nationalised the Canal in 1956 to subsidise the Aswan dam project and an insurrection developed that led to war
